Cohorts is not run by, paid by, or reporting to any school, college, or university. That is on purpose.

Students choosing a program deserve honest answers. Honest answers only happen when students feel safe saying what they really think about a course, a professor, residence, or a whole school. So we made a simple decision: Cohorts stays independent.

What independent means

  • No school partnerships. We do not have agreements with schools, colleges, or universities, and we are not paid by them.
  • Schools do not see your activity. No school can see your conversations, your posts, or what you do in the app.
  • No reports about students. We do not sell or share information about students with schools.
  • Program information is for students. Cohorts lists more than 21,000 programs across more than 350 Canadian colleges and universities so students can compare them. Listing a school does not mean that school works with us.

Why it matters

Official school channels are built to recruit. That is their job. Brochures, open houses, and school social accounts show the best version of every program.

Students need the other half of the story too: what a normal week feels like, which courses are harder than they look, and what people would do differently. Students will only share that if they know it will not be read by the school.

Independence is what makes the honest half possible.

For guidance counsellors, teachers, and parents

You are welcome to point students to Cohorts. Here is what to know:

  • It is free. Cohorts is free to download and free to use.
  • It is for students 16 and older. Grade 11 and 12 students, and college and university students.
  • Conversations are private. Students choose who they talk to, and conversations are not public.
  • It is built for safety. Students can block and report anyone who makes them uncomfortable.
  • It is not a replacement for you. Counsellors help with applications and next steps. Cohorts adds something you cannot: honest perspectives from students who are already in the programs your students are considering.

Does Cohorts partner with schools?
No. Cohorts is independent. We do not have partnerships with schools, colleges, or universities, and we are not paid by them.
Can my school see what I post or message on Cohorts?
No. Schools cannot see your conversations, posts, or activity on Cohorts.
Why are schools listed in the app if Cohorts does not work with them?
So students can explore and compare programs. Cohorts includes more than 21,000 programs across more than 350 Canadian colleges and universities. Being listed does not mean a school works with Cohorts.
Can a guidance counsellor recommend Cohorts?
Yes. Counsellors, teachers, and parents are welcome to share Cohorts with students.
Does Cohorts work with student councils?
We would like to. Student councils are run by students, and we are inviting a small group to become founding councils. Learn more on our student councils page.
