Students do not just need more information. They need context, belonging, and good timing. The future of student apps is not louder or more optimized. It is more human, more aware, and more considerate.
We do not tell students what to do. We meet them where they are.
How we design
1Listen first.
We build with students, not for them. Every feature begins with a real conversation on a real campus.
2We design for the journey.
Student life is not a straight line, and neither is Cohorts. What you need while exploring programs is different from what you need while waiting on an offer, or in the middle of a hard first term.
3Belonging is not earned.
Reading counts. Pausing is allowed. Quiet participation is valid. You do not have to perform to belong.
4Context beats content.
More information does not reduce anxiety. Better timing does. We try to show what matters right now, not everything at once.
5Real moments first.
We design for uncertainty, rejection, burnout, and pressure, even in success. Validation over urgency. Dignity over productivity.
6Technology stays in the background.
Where we use smart features, they work quietly, shaping what is relevant. People stay front and centre.
7Silence is a feature.
Sometimes the most respectful thing an app can do is nothing. Trust grows when students know they can step away and come back safely.
What we will not build
- Infinite scroll feeds
- Streaks, leaderboards, or follower counts
- Public comparison metrics
- Chatbot first experiences
- Hustle culture or toxic positivity
- Guilt driven notifications or forced productivity
- Anything that pretends to diagnose or treat mental health
Every "no" protects trust.
Independent by design
Cohorts is not run by, paid by, or reporting to any school, college, or university. Students only share what a program is really like when they know the school is not reading.
Our north star
If a student opens Cohorts during a hard moment and feels less alone, less behind, and more grounded, we are building the right thing.
Not the loudest app. Not the most addictive. The one students come back to when it matters.
